Notification by William the Conqueror
Reference Name D&C/A/1/1A/1
This Notification, addressed to all the Sheriffs within the Bishopric, transferred the seat of the Bishopric to the city of Lincoln. The move was carried out in the name of the king, but by the authority of Pope Alexander II, his legates, Archbishop Lanfranc, and the bishops. Land was given for the building of a mother church for the bishopric - the cathedral. The original endowments included the manors of Welton and Sleaford, the churches of Kirton [Lindsey], Caistor and Wellingore with lands and tithes, and the churches of St Laurence and St Martin in Lincoln, together with land and churches in other counties within the Diocese.
