Inscription:IN LOVING MEMORY OF/ LIEUTENANT FRANCIS ELLIOTT- F.R.G.S./ DISTRICT COMMISSIONER OF JUBALAND/ HE WAS KILLED IN ACTION AT SERENLI ON FEBRY 2ND 1916/ AND WAS BURIED AT BARDERA/ AGED 35 YEARS./ "HIS INTIMATE KNOWLEDGE OF THE SOMALI TRIBES, OF WHOSE COUNTRY AND CUSTOMS HE HAD MADE A SPECIAL STUDY, WAS OF THE GREATEST ASSISTANCE TO THE GOVERNMENT." -DESPATCH DATED MARCH 27TH 1916/ QUI PROCUL HINC- THE LEGEND'S WRIT,/ THE FRONTIER GRAVE IS FAR AWAY-/ QUI ANTE DIEM PERIIT,/ SED MILES, SED PRO PATRIA./ "GRANT HIM, O LORD, ETERNAL REST AND LET LIGHT PERPETUAL SHINE UPON HIM."
