Biographical Notes:In the 1901 Census there is a Frank, born in Hibaldstow who was a pupil teacher, aged 19, living as a lodger in Nottingham. Francis is not listed on the Hibaldstow War Memorial and this is probably because he was not living in Hibaldstow at the times of his enlistment. Born - 1881 at Hibaldstow, Lincs. Father - Thomas Watmough, born in the same village in 1854 and was a draper by trade. Mother - Emma ?, born 1854 in Goxhill, Lincs. He had an elder sister and brother called Ethel and Wilfred, and three younger brothers, Roslin, Lancelot and Waldo. In 1901 Frank was in Nottingham undergoing teacher training. After graduation he met a Ropsley girl (Elsie Mary Anstee), the daughter of the blacksmith. They married in Ropsley on the 24th of July 1913 and lived in the village. When Frank joined the army his wife Elsie moved to Richmond, Surrey. He joined the RGA (142nd Siege Battery), he was serving in the Arras sector when he was killed on the 8th of November 1917. He was missing from the original Ropsley memorial, but was added on the rebuild.

Researcher:Allan Ritson / Pat Horton

Notes:For reasons unknown, Francis' name was not included on the original Ropsley green memorial when it was unveiled in 1922. However, his name was eventually added in 1999. Commemorated Hibaldstow St Hybald / Ropsley St Peter / Ropsley W.M.
