Reference Name MLI80823

Name:
Possible Romano-British iron working site on land south of Tennyson Drive, Bourne

Summary:
Possible Romano-British iron working site on land south of Tennyson Drive, Bourne

Location:
BOURNE, SOUTH KESTEVEN, LINCOLNSHIRE

Description:
PRN 35291
An archaeological evaluation in early 2000 recorded a number of pits, gullies and linear ditches dating to the Romano-British period. Soil samples taken from two ditch fills found hammerscale and a small quantity of slag. One ditch truncated one of two earlier pits rich in charcoal. A soil sample taken from one pit contained in excess of 2kg of slag and well-preserved hammerscale. The sample also included a quantity of fired clay possibly from a hearth. Pottery retrieved from the ditches suggest industrial activity was taking place during the 2nd to 3rd century and coincided with Romano-British settlement activity in the immediate area (PRN 35292). {1}{2}{3}
