SITE OF POSSIBLE TUMULUS, SUPPOSED TO BE SITE OF TUMULUS LEVELLED IN THE 19TH CENTURY.{1}{2}{3}
NOTE 40392 TUMULUS LEVELLED IN 1833 AND 40393 BEACON HILL. THERE SEEMS TO BE SOME CONFUSION BETWEEN THE THREE. REV JAMES ALPASS PENNY IN 1922 SAID RANBY HOE WAS A TUMULUS CLOSE TO RANBY CHURCH THAT WAS REMOVED ABOUT 70 YEARS AGO. HE ALSO SAYS THE HOE WAS A MEETING PLACE OF ASSEMBLY FOR LINCOLNSHIRE FORCES UNDER SIR ROBERT WILLIS. THE GROUP MARCHED TO LONDON BUT ENDED THEIR LOT IN LOSECOTE FIELD NEAR EMPRINGHAM, RUTLAND IN 1470.{3}
There is a cropmark ring ditch recorded very close to this location (TF 2272 7915). {4}
