Roman activity on land at 9-11 Monson Street, Lincoln

Reference Name MLI97871

Name:
Roman activity on land at 9-11 Monson Street, Lincoln

Summary:
Roman activity, including pottery manufacture, on land at 9-11 Monson Street, Lincoln

Location:
PARK, LINCOLN, LINCOLNSHIRE

Description:
PRN 71102
The earliest features excavated at this site were a shallow post hole and pit. These were undated but are probably late prehistoric or early Roman, and were sealed by a soil deposit containing a small amount of Roman pottery including a single sherd of Neronian Samian ware. During the early 2nd century, a number of wooden outbuildings or sheds (represented by beam slots) were built along with a flimsy stone wall aligned broadly parallel with Ermine Street. These features may be associated with contemporary industrial activity recorded in previous excavations to the west (at 2-3 Monson Street in 1982). These structures appear to have gone out of use by the mid to late 2nd century and were replaced by at least two pottery kilns. A large quantity of late 2nd to early 3rd century pottery wasters were recovered from the kilns, at least half of which comprised high quality cream-coloured wares, mainly flagons. Greywares, black-burnished wares and colour-coated wares (which may be imitations of Nene Valley wares) were also present. A latrine pit was also dug at this time, perhaps for the use of the potters. Within its fill were several very large pieces of a large tile pot and fragments of an amphora. The large sherds may represent structural elements of the latrine. Immediately adjacent to the latrine was a small circular pit containing charcoal, pottery and vessel glass including part of a small glass bowl. The kilns appear to have gone out of use and been destroyed in the early 3rd century, after which the area was used for refuse dumping. The middens were levelled later in the 3rd or 4th century and the area became a cemetery (see PRN 70021). {1}{2}
