Description:
This is the birthplace of Alfred Lord Tennyson. The east wing on the south side, in 'Carpenter's Gothic', designed by George Tennyson, has been trimmed of its Gothic bits. The brick laying was done by the coachman, Mr Howlings. The main part of the house has an elegant, perhaps late Georgian staircase. {1}
The rambling old rectory is an attractive Georgian building, painted white with a small balcony, an oriel window and a pantiled roof. The large gothic dining room, with its tall gables, was added in 1819, designed by the poet's father, and built by his coachman, Hollins. {2}
A rectory, now house, dating from the mid 18th century which underwent alterations in the later 18th and 19th centuries. It was constructed of colourwashed red brick and has a pantile roof.
