St Nicholas Church, Lutton, is a Perpendicular brick church with little Decorated detail. Most of windows are Victorian. Only arch of the west tower to the nave and recessed spire are of stone. {1}{2}
The brick east wall of the churchyard has a 16th century inscription carved on it. {4}
Stained glass in this church dates to the late 14th century.{4}
The present red brick church building dates to the early 16th century and was restored in 1859. There is documentary evidence suggesting that there was an earlier 'parochial chapel' on the same site from the 12th century onwards. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {5}
This church is one of the only functioning pre-Reformation, brick-built churches in Lincolnshire. A watching brief was carried out during groundworks in the churchyard. A graveyard soil was revealed which contained articulated and disarticulated human remains (which were not retained) as well as pottery dating from the medieval period to the 20th century. This suggests that it had been in formation since at least the 13th century and had been continuously disturbed by burials. Remains relating to the restoration carried out in 1859 were also recorded. {6}{7}
