Red cross badge from First World War, belonging to Catherine Stow. Proficiency in Red Cross Work badge. Red, white and gold enamel scroll bar with cream ribbon, red enamel cross shaped pendant with white circle with 'The British Red Cross Society' in gold lettering. In centre of cross is a white shield with red cross in centre.Instituted 1911, discontinued 1914. Members had to have three successive Red Cross first aid examinations, provided an interval of at least 12 months had elapsed between any two successive examinations, or one certificate in each of Red Cross first aid and Red Cross nursing, plus a third certificate in either, provided that an interval of at least 12 months had elapsed from the previous examination. Additional bars were granted for each further Red Cross first aid or nursing certificate, provided that an interval of at least 12 months had elapsed between examinations. This badge has 3 additional bars, one for 1917, one for 1918 and one for 1930. This badge and the next were both together in a Red cross Society box, Badge Book Ref no 4782, with S C Stow on in pencil.
