The Nattes Drawings - Views in Lincolnshire

Views in Lincolnshire: The Nattes Drawings in the Joseph Banks Collection.

In 1789 Claude Nattes, topographical draughtsman and watercolour artist, was commissioned by Sir Joseph Banks, naturalist and patron of science, to record the buildings of Lincolnshire. This resulted in more than 700 drawings and watercolours, now preserved in 4 volumes at Lincolnshire Archives, and available to view in the image library.

The approximately 770 sketches were sold at Sothebys in 1880, and repurchased by the Right Honourable Edward Stanhope. They were subsequently sold to W.V.R.Fane by the widow of the Hon. Richard Stanhope.

They were eventually bequeathed to the City’s permanent collection in 1944, having been deposited with the library for safe keeping during the war. (so: Library, Museum and Art Gallery Committee 10th March 1944)

The Nattes drawings, as the work of a drawing master, provide a vast source of material of great value to the researcher of pre-Victorian topography and social history.(so: Dictionary of National Biography)
