3. Fiskerton log boat

An impressive boat made from a single tree trunk, found at one of the finest Iron Age sites in Europe. The boat is around 2500 years old, has been hollowed out from an oak trunk and is over 6 metres in length.

The boat was discovered in 2001 whilst the Environment Agency were undertaking groundworks in advance of flood defence improvements at Fiskerton, about 6 miles east of Lincoln.

Fiskerton is an internationally important archaeological site. In the Iron Age it was a focal point for sacred or votive activities, with previous investigation yielding an Early Iron Age ‘causeway’ and a range of associated votive prestige artefacts, including spears, axes, a currency bar, a sword and a dagger.
