Personal Memories

The memories of people who lived through a time period or event in history are useful sources that enable us to investigate the past.

1. As a class read ‘Personal memories - Paul Fitton’ and ‘Personal Memories - Betty Cowley’. Both these accounts are memories from people who remember WWII evacuees staying with them and their families.

  • How did they feel about the evacuees?
  • Discuss with the pupils how they would feel if an evacuee came to stay at their house.

2. As a class read the document ‘Personal Memories - Elizabeth Mossman’ to find out the thoughts of a wartime evacuee.

  • How did she feel about being evacuated?
  • Discuss with the pupils how they would feel if they had been evacuation and lived with a new family away from their parents and friends.

Activity: Ask pupils to imagine they are wartime evacuees and write a letter home to describe their feelings and tell their family about their experiences as an evacuee.
